Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's Foreign Ministry summoned Tuesday the Israeli ambassador to Amman Amir Weissbrod to demand the immediate release of two Jordanian citizens arrested by the Israeli authorities, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.
Spokesperson Sufian Qudah said the Ministry is trying through all the diplomatic, political and legal means available to release the two Jordanians, Abdulrahman Meri and Hiba Abdulbaqi, who were arrested by the Israeli authorities after crossing the King Hussein Bridge in the area between the two countries.
Qudah announced that the Ministry also demanded it be informed with the charges facing Meri and Abdulbaqi and updated throughout the course of the investigation.
He added that the ambassador was urged to guarantee the protection of the Jordanians' legal rights.
The Jordanian consul visited Meri to follow up on the case and check up on the conditions of his detention, and Abdulbaqi’s sister, who was with Hiba at the time of the arrest, managed to return to the Kingdom through the King Hussein Bridge, added the spokesman.
AFP quoted a source in the Ministry as saying that Abdulbaqi was arrested on August 20, while Meri was arrested on September 2.
Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1994.
