1000 Days of Heroic Resistance: A Tribute to Ukraine’s Struggle

Ammon News - The Embassy of Ukraine in Jordan said that the 19th of November 2024 marks 1,000 days of the Ukrainian people’s heroic fight against the full-scale, unprovoked, and unjustified Russian military aggression aimed at occupying Ukraine, destroying its sovereignty, and erasing its national and cultural identity. This relentless attack seeks to strip Ukrainians of their right to self-determination and impose Russia’s neo-imperialist agenda.

This war is colonial by nature. Despite its claims of defending the Global South, Russia is reviving a toxic vision of inequality and oppression. By launching brutal military aggression and threatening the world with nuclear weapons, Russia seeks to establish a global order rooted in force, dividing the world into “the zones of influence” and empowering the dictate by self-proclaimed “great powers.” Iran and North Korea have acted as enabler’s of Russia’s aggression. Their complicity underscores the broader danger posed by authoritarian regimes aligning to undermine international order and shutter peace and stability in the world.

After 1,000 days of its full-scale invasion, Russia has yet to achieve strategic success on the battlefield. Frustrated by its failures, it resorts to terrorizing Ukrainian civilians. Attacks on critical infrastructure, residential areas, and civilian facilities with missiles, rockets, bombs, and drones have caused widespread casualties and destruction. Since the full-scale invasion began, over 9,627 missiles and 6,987 drones have targeted Ukraine, with approximately three-quarters of these strikes hitting civilian objects—evidence of Russia’s deliberate tactics to terrorize and displace the population.

In the Ukrainian cities and villages under temporary Russian occupation, countless war crimes have been committed, including murder, rape, kidnapping, and acts of starvation. Russian forces have attacked schools, hospitals, and places of worship, subjecting civilians to unimaginable cruelty and violating every norm of international humanitarian law.

The Kremlin’s aggression has had catastrophic consequences for Ukrainian children. Over 19,546 children have been forcibly transferred or deported to Russia since February 24, 2022, as confirmed by Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General. On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court issued a lifetime arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin for war crimes related to the unlawful deportation of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. In occupied territories, Ukrainian children face restricted access to education. They are banned from using Ukrainian educational resources, and propaganda materials are forced upon them. Ukrainian literature is removed, and children are subjected to militarization and indoctrination, aimed at erasing their cultural and ethnic identity and preparing them to fight against their homeland.

Russia is also forcibly conscripting Ukrainian citizens in the occupied territories and pressuring them to accept Russian citizenship. Those who resist face threats, intimidation, and restrictions on humanitarian aid and basic needs, or risk persecutions and punishment. Concurrently, the Kremlin is attempting to alter the ethnic composition of occupied territories, deporting Ukrainians to Russia and resettling Russian citizens in their place.

Before the full-fladge invasion, skeptics doubted Ukraine’s ability to withstand the might of “the second-largest army in the world.” Yet, the Ukrainian state has not only survived but stood resolute. Ukrainians have refused to raise the white flag. They have been defending the blue and yellow Ukrainian national flag, their land, families, and themselves. United by pride in their country, they have been bravely resisting for 1000 days – both on the battlefield and through a self-organized multimillion army of volunteers supporting the armed forces and each other in this fight for freedom.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces have regained control of more than half of the territories occupied since February 2022. As of mid-November 2024, Russia has suffered irreparable losses, including approximately 720,000 soldiers. The Ukrainian Army debunked the myth of Russia’s invincible army, brought back the to war to the Russian territory, and exposed that its nuclear blackmail, red lines, and threats of escalation, are nothing more than bluster and bluffing.

Ukraine’s resistance would not have been possible without the unwavering support of its international allies. This assistance has not only bolstered Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty but also served as an investment in global security. By supporting Ukraine, the international community defends a rules-based future where nations coexist peacefully, respect territorial integrity, and reject aggression as a tool of foreign policy.

However, Ukraine’s pursuit of freedom has come at an immense cost. Thousands of lives have been lost, numerous cities and infrastructure have been decimated, 7,5 million Ukrainians have left their country and found shelter abroad. These sacrifices remind the world that freedom is never easily won.

Ukrainians deserve a just peace and stable security—achievable only through adherence to the United Nations Charter and international law, without compromising sovereignty or territorial integrity. These are the fundamental principles laid at the heart of the Peace Formula and the Victory Plan presented by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Peace at any price would mean occupation, deportation, and continued suffering.

As Russia shows no readiness for diplomacy, persisting with bombs and ultimatums, the international community must remain united. The aggressor must learn that territorial gains in the 21st century are immoral and futile. What was stolen must be returned to its rightful owners. Justice requires accountability of Russia for war crimes, crime of aggression, crimes against humanity, and reparations for the destruction inflicted on Ukraine. Only through upholding moral integrity and the rule of law can the world prevent such tragedies from happening again and in other regions.
