Ammon News - The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, has praised Jordan's efforts in hosting refugees despite its limited resources.
During a meeting on Monday with the Minister of Social Development, Wafaa Bani Mustafa, Patten highlighted Jordan's example as a country that has welcomed and supported refugees despite facing significant challenges and despite the immense pressure on its resources and infrastructure.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a regional meeting focused on the implementation of the Arab Strategy for the Prevention of and Response to All Forms of Violence in Asylum Context, which kicked off Monday in Amman.
Bani Mustafa said that Jordan has taken proactive measures to support refugees by issuing work permits for them, noting that roughly half of these permits are flexible, allowing refugees to work in a variety of occupations.
In addition to the ministry's social protection centers and houses, which accept beneficiaries regardless of nationality, she continued, Jordan is fully aware of the value of education for refugee children, as evidenced by the fact that they are enrolled in schools.
The minister emphasized that His Majesty King Abdullah II launched political, economic, and administrative modernization visions that led to constitutional amendments, including the addition of an article protecting women from various forms of violence and discrimination, and the launch of a women's strategy.
She said that thanks to the efforts of the Jordanian National Commission for Women, Jordan has completed the first phase of a national plan to implement UNSCR 1325, which aims to integrate a gender-based approach towards women's participation in prevention and protection processes during conflicts, and that it will soon launch the second phase.
