Ammon News - Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, said that the Aqaba meeting, which brought together Palestinian and Israeli senior officials, in the presence of Jordanian, American and Egyptian officials, is the first political engagement of its kind in years, and reflected a Palestinian-Israeli commitment to respecting all previous agreements, de-escalating and achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
Safadi said that the Aqaba Communiqué contained important commitments that, if implemented, would lead to a de-escalation and progress towards more comprehensive political engagement.
"The Aqaba meeting launched a political process that will convene again within a month in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh to follow up on the intense and direct negotiations that took place in the Aqaba meeting, and to build on its outcomes," Safadi added.
The Palestinian Authority and Israel had confirmed their joint readiness and commitment to immediately work to end unilateral measures for a period of 3-6 months. This includes an Israeli commitment to stop discussion of any new settlement units for 4 months and to stop authorization of any outposts for 6 months.
The five parties recognize the importance of upholding unchanged the historic status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem in word and practice, and emphasizes in this regard the Hashemite Custodianship / special role of Jordan.
Safadi said that the Aqaba meeting achievement is an important political step on a long and difficult road to stop the deterioration and progress towards a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution, and that implementation on the ground will determine the outcome of the situation.
He stressed that stopping unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution and provocative measures that push towards tension and violence are necessary to end the deterioration and de-escalate.
He underlined that the Kingdom will continue to exert efforts to stop the deterioration and find a real political horizon that activates the peace process and achieves progress in resolving the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which embodies the independent and sovereign Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, to live in peace and security alongside Israel.
Safadi thanked Egypt for its great efforts before and during the Aqaba meeting, lauding depth of the institutional coordination between the two countries.
Safadi also expressed appreciation for the US important role and participation in the meeting, stressing the centrality of the US leading role in all peace efforts.
He also stressed the importance of the US efforts and Biden administration's stances regarding the need to stop all unilateral measures, and work to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution.
