Ammon News - A highly specialised medical team of cardiologists, pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists at the Jordanian Royal Medical Services (JRHS) Friday performed surgery on a three-week-old baby girl born with a rare congenital anomaly.

Brigadier General Dr Yousef Zureikat, who led the team, said: "The child was transferred to Al-Hussein Medical City from one of the hospitals in the Kingdom, and after conducting the necessary medical examinations, advanced x-rays and diagnosing a congenital deformity, it was found that the child's heart was beating directly under the skin without the presence of any bone or cartilaginous wall protecting the heart."

Dr Zureikat said the deformity of the thoracic sternum is a rare and life-threatening condition that requires a very advanced medical centre to perform such operations that require "professionalism and high precision during surgery," adding that the operation is considered the first of its kind in Jordan and the region.
