The Government Wednesday held a meeting in the Interior Ministry to discuss the rise in prices and the measures taken to stem the hike.

Minister of Interior, Mazen Faraya, said the government is working to stem the hike in the market prices, not the least of which are vegetables, meat and poultry whose prices have increased.

The price hike is mainly driven by a global wave of high prices resulting from the Ukraine crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the high cost of shipping, Faraya said, adding that it is important for citizens to be aware of the government's role in stabilising the prices in the market.

He stressed the importance of the administrative rulers exercising their oversight role and following up on the markets through extensive field tours to implement government measures and refer violators to the authorities.

Minister of State for Media Affairs, Faisal Shboul, said the government measures to cushion the blow of the global prices hike were put in place three months ago, as the government worked to reduce customs duties on 40 percent of basic commodities

Shboul indicated that the current rise in prices is due to several economic factors related to the rise in shipping prices, the consequences of the COCIVD-19 pandemic, Ramadan and the Ukraine crisis, which indirectly affected the region and the world as a whole.

Agriculture Minister Khaled Huneifat praised administrative rulers for their role in overseeing the market.

He said the agricultural sector continues to assume its national role, praising the commitment of farmers, poultry breeders, cows and milk producers to fixing prices and not raising them as a result of the global crisis.
