Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday held talks with Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela on relations between the two countries and the current regional and international developments.
During a one-on-one meeting followed by expanded talks, attended by Their Royal Highnesses Prince Faisal Bin Al Hussein and Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and a number of senior officials from the two countries, the two sides stressed on the need to expand cooperation between Jordan and Panama in all fields, especially in economic, investment, security, energy and marine navigation domains.
Welcoming President Varela, King Abdullah stressed the deep relations between the two countries and the importance of his visit in strengthening the friendly ties between Jordan and Panama, and the need to build on them to expand cooperation and strengthen economic relations.
His Majesty expressed his satisfaction with the Panamanian president's participation in the 2018 Laureates and Leaders for Children Summit, which opened at the Dead Sea yesterday.
For his part, the Panamanian president said during the talks that he was pleased to visit Jordan, and expressed his admiration for His Majesty's leadership and efforts to achieve stability and peace and promote dialogue, not only at the level of the Middle East, but beyond, to enhance dialogue between the followers of all religions, which is of great importance to Panama.
The visit, Varela said, is an opportunity to bring Latin America and the Middle East closer together, adding that "through Jordan and His Majesty's leadership, we seek to increase the exchange of visits between the two regions." He said his country looked forward to further improving trade exchange and tourism cooperation, and to working with Jordan to build a more secure world through close cooperation in the security field.
The Panamanian leader said he is satisfied with his participation in the 2018 Laureates and Leaders for Children Summit and was impressed by the level of organization and the commitment to its noble goal of combating child labor.
"When we follow the media in Latin America, the news is different from what we see in the region. The media focuses only on conflicts, but there are also those who are working hard to build a better future for their people and for the region", he said.
Varela said that relations between the two countries will grow after the visit, and will contribute to economic and social progress, adding that he will also send a delegation to Jordan to open an embassy in Amman.
During the talks, which were held over a working lunch, King Abdullah highlighted the investment and competitive advantages offered by the Jordanian economy, the Kingdom's unique strategic location and the free trade agreements it signed with many countries, which made it a gateway to the regional and international markets.
The two sides reviewed the challenges and crises in the Middle East region and efforts to reach political solutions that restore security and stability for their peoples.
His Majesty said efforts should be stepped up to break the stalemate in the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis to reach a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution and leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The King stressed the importance of intensifying efforts in the war on terrorism in accordance with a holistic approach, and strengthening cooperation between the two countries in this regard, as the threat of terrorism threatens the global security and peace system.
During the talks, President Varela stressed his country's keenness on strengthening relations with Jordan and expanding the scopes of bilateral cooperation in various fields "in a manner to serve the interests of the two countries."
The Panamanian leader expressed his country's appreciation for the important role played by Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, to reach political solutions to the crises in the region, praising the humanitarian efforts exerted by the Kingdom towards the refugees.
The talks were attended by the Royal Court Chief, the Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, the Director of General Intelligence, the King's advisor, the director of the King's Office, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply.
Also on the Panamanian side were a number of senior officials and the non-resident Panamanian Ambassador to the Kingdom.
Upon his arrival at the Al Husseiniyah Palace, the Panamanian president was accorded an official welcoming ceremony, where the King led top officials to welcome him. The two leaders reviewed an honor guard, while a brass band played the national anthems of the two countries.
