Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Senate President Faisal Al Fayez urged the European Union to increase its economic and financial aid to the Kingdom in accordance with a fixed strategy.

During a meeting with President of the European Economic and Social Committee Georges Dassis and the accompanying delegation, AL Fayez said that part of this aid should be directed to the general budget to enable it to overcome economic challenges resulting from the Syrian refugees crisis.

The Senate president voiced Jordan's pride in its partnership with the EU in various domains, and called for further boosting this partnership.

The meeting, which was also attended by a number of Senate' officials, dealt with the current situation in the region, mainly repercussions of the Syrian crisis on the national economy.

"Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis and until the end of 2017, Jordan has provided $10.3 billion to help Syrian refugees at a time when the international community did not shoulder its fair share of the responsibility towards the refugees and Jordan," he said, adding that this led to a rise in Jordan's debts, the budget deficit as well as the poverty and unemployment rates.

Al Fayez praised the EU support to Jordan and called for providing fixed financial support similar to the U.S aid to enable the Kingdom to continue its humanitarian role towards the Syrian refugees.

The president of the European Economic and Social Committee highlighted the important role played by Jordan to achieve peace and stability in the region and provide services to the Syrian refugees.
