Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's permanent representative to the UN Sima Bahous praised efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II at the regional and international levels to enhance the principles of tolerance, compassion, empathy and mutual respect.
In a speech during an activity that was held by the Jordanian mission within the World Interfaith Harmony Week in New York last week, Bahous said that interfaith dialogue and religious harmony are more important today than ever before.
She also reviewed Jordan's expertise in interfaith harmony and the important role of the young people in promoting dialogue between them and countering extremist ideology and terrorism, stressing the role of social media in promoting inclusion, multiculturalism and inclusive citizenship among young people.
The activity was attended by Spain, Austria, the Vatican, Saudi Arabia, the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue as well as the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
The initiative comes in response to His Majesty King Abdullah II's call when he launched the World Week of Interfaith Dialogue initiative during the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2010.
On October 20, 2010, it was unanimously adopted by the UN and henceforth the first week of February is observed as a World Interfaith Harmony Week.
