Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Awni Qandah is a Christian television presenter in Jordan. But on Saturday, he declared that he converted to Islam on his Facebook, then seemingly deleted account, and now Jordanian social media is talking about it.
Al Bawaba and various other Arabic-language media outlets reported his announcement, and Qandah gave an interview to albosala.com explaining his decision. He told the site that the main reason for his conversion was the Al-Ikhlas sura of the Quran, which discusses the unity of God, and is seen as a rejection of the Christian trinity.
Qandah further told albosala that he has been accepted with open arms by many Muslim friends and neighbors so far, and is looking forward to studying Islam further.
Qandah’s Facebook page is no longer active, but the post announcing his conversion received at least over 700 likes, according to a screenshot seen by Al Bawaba.
Jordan has religious freedom as law, and just under 5% of the population is believed to be Christian, while the majority of Jordanians are Muslim.
Qandah is not the only Jordanian Christian to convert to Islam. While other reasons exist too, last year 7iber and Al-Monitor reported that some Christian men convert to Islam to gain a legal upper hand in custody battles following divorce from their Christian wives.
