Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Tourism is an important sector of the Jordanian economy and the country is currently planning to invest in infrastructure and development of tourism-based projects.
A slowdown in tourism due to unrest in the region has given the government time to assess projects and marketing efforts and, according to eTurboNews, it has identified high demand for adventure, medical and religious tourism, and programs will focus on these areas as well as agritourism, cultural and film tourism.
There are around 80 projects in the works and much of the infrastructure work will employ Jordanian citizens, reports eTurboNews.
Some 82 percent of workers in the tourist sector are Jordanian, according to the ministry, while guest workers make up around 30 percent of the staff at tourist restaurants and up to 10 percent of hotel workers.
“Since 2011, the number of workers in the tourism sector has increased by 23 percent from around 40,000 to over 50,000 workers,” Issa Gammoh, secretary general of the ministry, told the publication.
