Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - This past month witnessed major changes in the Jordanian media sector with resignations, appointments, and claims of government intervention in such decisions.

On Thursday, Columnist Samih Maaytah was appointed chairman of the Editorial Board of Al Arab Al Yawm daily newspaper, Ammon News learned, less than a week after he was removed from his position as editor-in-chief of Al Rai daily newspaper, which he held for only 4 months.

Maaytah was appointed to the post on Thursday by Al Arab Al Yawm's administration, sources at the daily newspaper confirmed the report.

The Managerial Board, headed by owner Elyas Jreisat, decided to form an Editorial Board, consisting of Samih Maaytah as chairman, and Editor-in-Chief Muhammad Kaaoush, and two others.

Maaytah was controversially removed from his post as Editor-in-Chief of the majority government-owned Al Rai newspaper last week, who appointed Al Rai veteran journalist Majid Asfour to replace him.

Maaytah had charged that his removal from Al Rai came upon directives from the government based on the close relationship between Prime Minister Awn Khasawneh and the new Editor-in-Chief Asfour.

Maaytah had worked as an advisor to both former Prime Ministers Samir Rifai and Marouf Bakhit, and was the spokesperson for the 2010 parliamentary elections.

Earlier in December, three of Al Arab Al Yawm's renowned journalists resigned at the same time, citing disagreements with the owner, Jreisat.

Board Chairman Taher Odwan, Editor-in-Chief Fahed Khitan, and head of the Economics section Salameh Dara'awi quit together from the daily newspaper.

Also on Thursday, the Board of Al Ghad daily newspaper appointed Jumana Ghunaimat as Editor-in-Chief, following the resignation of Fu'ad Abu Hijleh from his post without giving reason.

Ghunaimat was a deputy editor-in-chief and head of the economics department in Al Ghad.

Ghunaimat on Thursday became the first woman to be appointed as Editor-in-Chief of a daily newspaper in Jordan.

Sources told Ammon News that Al Arab Al Yawm's ex-chief editor Fahed Khitan will begin writing his column for Al Ghad starting in January 2012.
