Ammon News - The Foreign Ministry on Monday said that it is checking on the safety of Jordanians in Turkey and Syria, following a major earthquake that struck southern Turkey early Monday.

A crisis cell has been activated at the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, in addition to two crisis cells in the Jordanian embassies in Ankara and Damascus, according to ministry spokesman Sinan Majali.

It is still too early to say whether any of the casualties are Jordanians, he said, adding that "the ministry is closely monitoring the developments."

More than 300 people have been killed in Turkey and Syria after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit in the early hours of Monday morning, according to media outlets and Turkish and Syrian officials.

The quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometers (11 miles), the US Geological Survey said, with a 6.7-magnitude aftershock striking 15 minutes later.
