Ammon News - The Jordanian Public Prosecutor Office, which began activities of its 1st international conference on Thursday, stressed importance of implementing restorative justice to reach pre-litigation settlements, which revives pre-court dispute resolution as an "important" religious human principle.

Speaking at the event, Jordanian and Arab officials highlighted restorative justice models, integration of penalty alternatives aimed to preserve rights and achieve justice, reduce court overcrowding and resolve disputes with involvement of society, law enforcement and justice agencies.

Head of Jordanian Public Prosecutor Office, Yousef Thiyabat, said Jordan Public Prosecution, in implementation of Judicial Council's plans and strategies in the development and modernization field, realizes importance of keeping pace with developments in contemporary criminal policy, which drove it to pick restorative justice as a main theme for this international forum.

Globally, he noted criminal justice system has witnessed "remarkable" developments recently in its various programs and work mechanisms, adding that developed countries made strides in this regard, in terms of legislation and commitment to international principles and standards.

In addition, he said recent criminal justice reflected need to move to restorative justice concepts in the plans and policy of the criminal legislator.

This approach, he added, constitutes an "innovative" method in managing criminal cases, especially since traditional criminal justice system failed to confront crime and limit its effects.
