Ammon News - A joint panel comprising eight of the Senate's permanent committees, headed by Chairman of the Public Services Committee Mostafa Hamarneh, on Monday discussed public transport woes and proposals to develop the sector.

The joint panel comprises heads of the committees on public services, finance and economy, education, health and environment, agriculture and water, labor and social development, energy and tourism.

Hamarneh noted as key challenges to the transport sector an increase in the Kingdom’s population in past decades as a result of crises and wars in neighboring countries, an infrastructure in cities that cannot accommodate such large numbers as well as a rise by ten fold in the number of private vehicles on the streets.

He pointed to "multiple references" in the sectors concerned with public transport, absence of institutionalized coordination among stakeholders, limited resources and poor investment in the sector.

Hamarneh said another meeting will be held to consider all the points raised by the committee heads and come up with recommendations.
