Senate, House speakers meet Azeri National Assembly head

Ammon News - Senate President Faisal Fayez and Lower House Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi Saturday met in Baku with Azerbaijani National Assembly Speaker Sahiba Gafarova on the sidelines of the Baku Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.

They discussed ways and means of enhancing Jordanian-Azeri ties in political, economic, investment, trade and parliamentary fields, as well as current regional issues, including the Syrian crisis, the Arab-Israeli conflict and combating terrorism.

Fayez praised the deep relations between the two countries and their leaders' keen interest in further cemnting cooperation.

Dughmi called for coordination in parliamentary forums on various issues of common concern.

They said the Middle East has been experiencing crises, political conflicts and a serious security turmoil for long years with no real efforts by the international community to stop them.

However, Jordan, in cooperation with its friends in the world, made unremitting efforts to end the conflicts, which posed economic and security challenges to the Kingdom, he added.

Fayez said that Jordan faces the challenge of militias affiliated with regional countries that try to smuggle drugs and weapons to the Kingdom and the Arab Gulf countries, taking advantage of the withdrawal of Russian forces from areas on the Syrian border.

He urged international support for Jordan to continue its pivotal role in the fight against terrorism and extremism, through increased investments and tourism.

Fayez and Dughmi said the Palestinian issue should remain a major topic on the agenda of the Parliamentary Network of Non-Aligned Countries, and urged coordination of efforts by the Non-Aligned Countries to find a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.

For her part, Gavarova noted the high level Azeri-Jordanian relations, commending Jordan's services to Syrian refugees and the efforts made by His Majesty King Abdullah to end regional conflicts.

Fayez also held similir meeting with a number of Arab parliamentary speakers in the Azeri capital.
