25 security officers injured in Aqaba chlorine gas leak discharged

Ammon News - Twenty-eight public security, civil defense and gendarmerie personnel, who were injured in the chlorine gas leak incident in Aqaba yesterday, left hospital on Tuesday, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said.

It said that all public security casualties were officers injured in the port and the surrounding area, where they were assigned to guard the place in addition to personnel of the nearby Al-Durra border crossing.

The PSD said that the moment the incident was reported, civil defense crews moved in and the first responders were the hazardous materials team, which was on stoodby with plans in place in advance and machinery and equipment ready to deal with any emergencies.

Only two injuries were recorded among the reponders, who provided rescue and ambulance service and disinfected the site and people exposed to toxic gas, it said.

The PSD added that two teams from the Department of Laboratories and Criminal Evidence promptly arrived at the scene and carried out surveys and collected samples, which were sent to laboratories and test results were sent to relevant authorities.

It said that the gas leak was dealt with by Civil Defense Directorate's Hazardous Materials and Water Rescue crews in close coordination with the Aqaba Police Department, Aqaba Gendarmerie Command and Laboratories and Criminal Evidence Department.

It said ambulance crews ferried 450 injured people to hospitals.
