Ammon News - A newly launched national economic modernization vision proposes reducing water losses by 2 percent annually to eliminate a total technical loss of 47 percent.
Jordan, with an average annual precipitation of about 95 mm, is one of the world's water-poorest countries, with ground and surface waters accounting for 85 percent of available resources.
Agriculture consumes 50.17 percent of the Kingdom's available water resources, while 45.8 percent is used for domestic purposes.
According to 2021 estimates, the water sector contributed 0.5 percent of GDP, or JD200 million.
Because of demographic shifts and population growth, the Kingdom's freshwater availability has decreased dramatically.
In this context, the Economic Modernization Vision, unveiled in early June, calls for a shift toward desalinating sea water and increasing water efficiency, as well as pursuing more efficient supply and demand governance.
In order to address inefficiencies in the entire system, the vision also calls for using modern technology for water sustainability and giving municipalities and local governments a greater say in the use and distribution of water.
The water sector currently employs 6,800 people, accounting for 0.4 percent of the total workforce in the Kingdom, and is expected to grow to 9,700 by 2033.
