Ammon News - Jordan's unemployment rate fell by 2.2 percent in the first quarter of the current year 2022, to 22.8 percent, compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In its quarterly report on the jobless rate, the Department of Statistics (DoS) said on Monday that the unemployment rate for males was 20.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 31.5 percent for females. In comparison to the first quarter of last year, the unemployment rate for men fell by 3.7 percentage points while it grew by 3.0 percentage points for women.
Male unemployment fell by 0.9 percentage points in the first quarter of this year compared to the fourth quarter of last year, while female unemployment rose by 0.8 percentage points.
In comparison to other educational levels, the unemployment rate among university degree holders (unemployed persons with a bachelor's degree or higher divided by the labor force of the same educational qualification) increased to 26.6 percent.
According to the findings, 52.3 percent of the overall jobless held secondary school diplomas or higher, while 47.1 percent had educational credentials lower than secondary school.
Unemployment rates differed by educational level and gender, with 24.6 percent of unemployed males holding a bachelor's degree or higher compared to 78.7 percent of unemployed females.
At the governorate level, the Mafraq Governorate had the highest unemployment rate of 28.7 percent, while the Zarqa Governorate had the lowest unemployment rate of 19.2 percent.
The employed proportion of the total population aged 15 and older was 25.7 percent, with 59.4 percent of male employees in the age range 20-39 years and 60.3 percent of female workers in the age group 20-39 years.
The findings revealed a considerable disparity in the distribution of the workforce by educational level and gender, with 59.2 percent of the entire male labor force having less than secondary education, compared to 11.1 percent for females.
The findings also indicated that 71.2 percent of the overall female workforce held a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 24.7 percent among males.
For the first quarter of this year, the revised economic participation rate (the labor force attributed to the population 15 years and older) was 33.2 percent (53.2 percent for males versus 13.7 percent for females), compared to 34.5 percent (54.8 percent for males and 14.0 percent for females) for the same quarter last year.
