Jordan warns of absence of prospects for comprehensive regional peace

Ammon News - Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi Tuesday raised the alarm on the lack of prospects for realising comprehensive regional peace and of the illegal Israeli actions that undermine the two-state solution.

Safadi added that Israel's illegal actions are aimed at making the one-state solution a fait accompli, "a hideous reality that would perpetuate apartheid."

In a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Safadi said that there is no alternative to the two-state solution as a way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

During the session, Safadi added that peace is a strategic Arab goal and a global necessity, saying that the only way to realise peace is by materialising the two-state solution that would guarantee the establishment of an independent sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Safadi reiterated his condemnation of the murder of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, who was assassinated by Israeli soldiers, according to the available information and evidence of eyewitnesses, stressing the need to launch an international investigation to ensure that the killer is held accountable.

In his speech during the dialogue session, he referred to the ugliness of the inhumane attack on the mourners of Abu Aqleh. He added, "In what world is such a hideous inhuman behaviour committed without accountability?"

During the session, which was moderated by journalist Hadley Gamble of CNBC, Safadi stressed that international law and the Charter of the UN must be applied fairly.

He stressed the need to continue providing international support for refugees and host countries, warning of the decline in support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and Syrian refugees.

In response to a question about the repercussions of the Ukrainian crisis, Safadi said these repercussions must be dealt with comprehensively, which showed the depth of interdependence between countries and the fragility of the mechanism of joint international action.

He stressed the importance of protecting Lebanon from collapse, activating the joint Arab role in efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis and supporting Iraq's stability.

Safadi also stressed the need to activate regional cooperation to face challenges: energy, water, climate change and other challenges that can be addressed through collective action.

In addition, Safadi met his counterparts and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Finland, Pekka Haavisto, and the Republic of Rwanda, Vincent Perrota.

Safadi also met with the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North African Affairs in the US House of Representatives, Representative Ted Deutch.

The meetings addressed bilateral relations and ways to develop them in various fields and the latest regional issues, international developments and issues of common interest and efforts to resolve crises.
