Amman Chamber of Commerce President Khalil Haj Tawfiq said Tuesday that a high demand on imported food items in the past period was not accompanied by price rises.
Tawfiq, who is also President of the Foodstuff Traders Association, said in an interview with Petra that market sales this year were better than the previous year's, particularly after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.
"Commercial activity in the markets began to decline gradually on the fourth day of the holy month of Ramadan, driven by a drop in the purchasing power of citizens," he said, adding that importers' sales to restaurants this month were better than last year's.
He called for concerted action to maintain the flow of goods to the Kingdom and ensure a safe stock of supplies amid supply chain disruptions, a ban on exports by some countries and the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine, which impacted grain and fodder markets, oil prices and shipping fares.
Tawfiq said fresh produce prices have soared recently in the local market due to limited production as crops were hit by freezing, but there were no price hikes of any imported commodity.
