Shell Energy considers about establishing a trial oil shale distillation unit in Jordan

24-10-2024 02:34 PM

Ammon News - The company Shell Energy is researching technical and economic issues for developing a pilot distillation unit in the Sultani area to match the Jordanian oil shale, including licenses, technology rights, guarantees, and development.

As per the company's management plan, they are currently in the process of forming a partnership with an oil shale distillation technology owner to set up a distillation unit. The goal is to evaluate, study, and develop the technology scientifically to build trust in the results and eventually market the Jordanian oil shale project. This step is crucial in determining the economic viability of using oil shale distillation as an energy source in Jordan.

The establishment of the National Company for the Production of Oil and Electricity from Oil Shale in 2007 is important. Its goals involve extracting oil shale for use in various industries, producing shale oil, oil and gas through distillation, generating electricity, and manufacturing cement, bricks, chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides. The company also conducts oil shale exploration throughout the Kingdom.

Ammon received data from the company indicating that in the first 9 months of this year, the company's total losses reached roughly 1.49 million dinars, equivalent to 60% of the company's capital as of September 2024.

At the end of the year, the National Electricity Company bought around 2,989 thousand gigawatt hours from the Attarat Oil Shale Project, marking a 201% rise from the purchases made by the end of 2022.
