Khasawneh vows action against market monopolists

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh Monday said his government will take legal action against those who he accused of practicing monopoly in the market.

In a meeting in the Industry, Trade and Supply Ministry, Khasawneh said the private sector is a "main" partner, highlighting its positive role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The private sector, for the most part, has put the national interest before profit, and embodied the spirit of national responsibility in addressing the Corona crisis," the premier said.

He emphasised that the government will work in the same spirit of partnership with various sectors to alleviate as much as possible the severity of the current conditions and their repercussions, not the least of which are the Ukraine crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said as the month of Ramadan approaches, prices must be regulated and goods must be available at fair prices.

He said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has put health concerns above everything and worked to develop and improve the health sector and increase its capacity. It then gradually and cautiously started opening the country.

He added that the government has supported the market and industries by introducing a range of measures and customs reforms.

Khasawneh highlighted the efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II in securing a secure strategic stockpile, adding that the Kingdom's wheat will last for nine months, while that of barely will last for 14 months.

He also said that the Ukraine crisis has impacted the supply chain, the prices of oil and shipping, adding that the government will work in partnership with the private sector to alleviate the fallout of the economic crises.
