Jordan Society of Tourism & Travel Agents (JSTA) called on the concerned authorities to take more measures to help travel and tourism companies overcome Covid-19 pandemic-induced repercussions and maintain sustainability of their work.

Addressing a press conference held at Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) on Wednesday, JSTA's president, Suhail Halasah, highlighted the travel companies' key demands and urged the concerned authorities to implement the JSTA's proposals and solutions, submitted during the last period.

Tourism companies are the backbone for marketing Jordan as a tourist destination internally and externally, he noted, pointing out that Jordan's tourism sector is hardest-hit activity by the pandemic, which will be the last to recover, according to Halasah.

Meanwhile, JSTA's board member, Khaled Hijjawi, called for relieving travel and tourism companies from implementing Defense Order No. 6, to alleviate the pandemic's repercussions.

Travel companies should be exempted from annual licenses to help their continued activity, in addition to amending regulations and instructions to protect the industry, according to Hijjawi.

For his part, Chairman of the Lower House Tourism, Antiquities and Public Services Committee, MP Majid Rawashdeh, said will support all the travel sector's demands, stressing the need to save tourist businesses from closing their doors and laying off employees.

Rawashdeh also said the tourism sector plays an "important" role in supporting the national economy, empowering local communities and employing Jordanian workers.

Noting future action to ensure recovery, Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) President, Khalil Haj Tawfiq, stressed the importance of the tourism sector and the need to provide "quick" solutions and develop medium and long-term plans to advance its performance.
