Jordan records 72pct of annual rainfall average

Ammon News - The Kingdom's 14 main dams now hold 30 per cent, or 85 million cubic meters (mcm), of their current total storage capacity of 280 mcm, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation said on Saturday.

The King Talal Dam, the Kingdom's second largest, now holds 65.7 per cent of its total capacity of 75mcm after rain over the weekend poured an additional 0.8mcm.

Also, 72 per cent, or 5.89 billion cubic meters, of the Kingdom's long-term rainfall average of 8.1 billion cubic meters has been realized since the start of the 2021-2022 wet season.

Despite historically scarce precipitation, the southern Red Sea port of Aqaba has seen its annual average at 183.8 per cent since the beginning of the season.

In its regional breakdown of annual rainfall average performance, the ministry said that the Irbid governorate has received 95.9 per cent of its long-term average, followed by Salt (94.5), Amman (88.7), Ajloun (82.8), Zarqa (75.8), Ma'an (61), Madaba (61), Karak (53.3), Mafraq (50), Jerash (48.3), Tafileh (38.3), and Shoubak (37).
