Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Senate on Thursday endorsed 2019 amendments to the 2019 Social Security Law, while rejecting an article granting deputies and senators retirement benefits, which means returning the bill to the Lower House.

During its session, chaired by the Senate President, Faisal Fayez, the Senate passed the bill as referred from the Lower House, but rejected an amendment that makes members of Parliament eligible for old-age, disability and death insurances.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State, Rajai Muasher, who attended the Senate's session, defended the Lower Houses' decision, saying the article's inclusion came in agreement with the government as a "national interest," which contributes to boosting candidacy for parliamentary elections, especially workers in the public and private sectors without affecting their financial rights.

Muasher noted the rejection to cover parliamentarians in the pension umbrella deprives a limited number of deputies from voluntary subscription, both paid by the Parliament and the beneficiary lawmakers, a procedure applied in other corporations.

Muasher announced the financial cost for covering parliamentarians is "limited" and was studied by the government.
