FM stresses need to preserve historic, legal status of Jerusalem

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Safadi warned the US of dangerous consequences if it recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying that such a decision would "trigger anger across the Arab and Muslim world, fuel tension and jeopardize peace efforts." In a phone call with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, late Sunday, Safadi highlighted the need to preserve the historical and legal status of the holy city, stressing at the same time the need to refrain from taking any measures or actions aiming at altering Jerusalem status quo.

Safadi also pointed to the serious consequences of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, referring to the significance of religious, historical and national status of the city, not only to the Palestinians and Jordanians but for all people in the Arab and Islamic world.

Such a declaration, Safadi told Tillerson, would trigger great anger and bring more tension in the Arab and Muslim world.

Safadi also warned that recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel would jeopardize U.S peace efforts aiming at achieving Israeli-Palestinian peace, welcomed and supported by Jordan and Arab countries .

FM stressed the need to address the status of Jerusalem in the framework of the final negotiations and in accordance with all relevant international resolutions.

The two officials also tackled bilateral ties and other regional issues, highlighting the need to continue working to bring about peace, stability and security to the region . Jordan Foreign Ministry has called for two meetings for the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the latest developments linked to Jerusalem and means of necessary steps if Trump declares Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
