Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - More than 21,000 illegal connections to the electricity grid have been detected in the past ten months, according to Energy and Mineral Resources Regulatory Commission Chairman Farouq Hiyari.
He said in a statement Saturday that the commission's staff members had detected more than 10,000, or 47 per cent of the electricity theft cases recorded since the start of the year until the end of October. The rest were discovered by security forces or the three electricity distribution companies, he added.
Hiyari stressed the importance of cooperation between security bodies and the electricity distribution companies to stem the phenomenon of electricity theft.
Under the law, the illegal connection to electricity supply is punishable by imprisonment of between six months to two years or a fine no less than JD2,000 and not exceeding JD10,000, or both penalties.
