Ammon News - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced that the British Embassy in Amman has officially notified it of the British authorities' decision to suspend the electronic visa system (ETA) as of September 10, 2024, which the British authorities had announced in early February to facilitate the granting of visas electronically to Jordanian citizens wishing to visit the United Kingdom.

The ministry's official spokesperson, Ambassador Dr. Sufian Qudah, said that the British authorities had attributed their decision in a letter from the British Home Secretary addressed to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, to the continued violations and what it called in the letter the "misuse" of these facilities by some citizens who traveled to the United Kingdom.

Qudah explained that the ministry had conducted a dialogue with the British authorities, through the Kingdom's embassy in London, to develop solutions to address the violations of some traveling citizens of British residency and immigration laws, but the continued misuse of these facilities by violators prompted the competent British authorities to reconsider the electronic visa system and return to working with the previous regular visa system, as it was in effect before the beginning of last February.

The British decision is subject to amendment in the future, and that dialogue is ongoing with the British side to re-adopt the previous electronic visa system ETA under conditions that meet the requirements, indicating that the purpose of this system is to facilitate the visit of Jordanians to British territory, Qudah confirmed.
