Ammon News - Director-General of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), Nizar Muhaidat, said on Tuesday that Jordan seeks to manufacture expensive therapeutic medications at lower prices, as their number reaches 1,100 types of medications.
During a press conference, Muhaidat considered that medicines classified as therapeutic strain the public sector’s medical bill, whose purchases amount to approximately JD140- JD150 million annually, as they are spent on purchasing medicines.
Approximately 8,000 medicines are registered and priced at the JFDA, including 5,000 medicines for less than JD10, and the rest are used to treat chronic diseases, as their number reaches 1,100 therapeutic types, and they are expensive, he said.
There are some medicinal items that have not yet been registered and are imported annually for the benefit of government tenders, amounting to 154 medicinal items, Muhaidat added.
There are 64,000 food establishments that are monitored directly by the administration, and in 2023 there were approximately 96,000 inspection visits, whether they were for food or pharmaceutical establishments or medical supplies, he stated.
