FM meets with Russian President's Special Envoy to Syria

Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met on Wednesday with the Russian President's Special Envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, in a meeting that focused on the necessity of establishing security and stability on the Syrian side and facing the challenge of drug smuggling from it to the Kingdom.
Safadi said that stabilizing stability in southern Syria and facing the threat of drug smuggling, terrorism and the presence of militias is a threat Jordan faces, and Jordan is taking all necessary measures to confront it and seeks to cooperate with Russia to end it.
Safadi stressed the importance of the Russian role as a factor of stability in southern Syria, and the importance of the Russian role as a guarantor of stability in the de-escalation agreements and reconciliations reached in 2018.
Safadi also stressed that reaching a political solution that ends the Syrian crisis, achieves the aspirations of its people, rids Syria of terrorism, preserves its unity and territorial integrity, restores its security, stability, and creates the necessary conditions for the voluntary return of refugees in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, is a priority for Jordan.
Safadi and Lavrentiev stressed the importance of Jordanian-Russian coordination in addressing the challenges in southern Syria and in efforts to advance towards a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with Resolution 2254.
Safadi welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2672 on facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria across the borders, which will help provide the humanitarian needs of more than 1.4 million Syrian citizens.
For his part, Lavrentiev appreciated the role played by the Jordanian Kingdom in supporting efforts to reach a political solution to end the Syrian crisis, in addition to its role in hosting Syrian refugees.
Lavrentiev stressed that his country will cooperate with Jordan in facing the challenges in southern Syria, especially with regard to drug smuggling and in working to achieve stability.
The two sides stressed the importance of continuing to support the efforts of the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and his endeavors to achieve progress in the political process.
The visit of Lavrentiev, comes at the head of a high-level joint delegation that includes a number of senior Russian officials concerned with Syrian affairs from the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, as a follow-up to the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister to Amman last November.
