Ammon News - The UN Security Council plans to vote on Monday on a draft resolution urging an immediate halt to fighting in Sudan, in a new effort to push the rival generals in the country.

The resolution drafted by Britain and Sierra Leone, which AFP has seen, urges the parties to stop fighting and begin sincere negotiations in order to take steps towards reducing tensions, with the goal of reaching a countrywide ceasefire at the earliest opportunity.

Since April 2023, there has been a conflict ongoing between the Sudanese army under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces under his ex-deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

Accusations of war crimes have been made against both parties, which include targeting civilians, obstructing humanitarian aid, and causing starvation in numerous civilian populations.

The war has caused 11.3 million people to be displaced, with almost 3 million of them now living outside Sudan, as reported by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, who labeled it a humanitarian "catastrophe."

Around 26 million individuals are experiencing extreme food insecurity, with a famine officially declared in the Zamzam camp in Darfur. Recently, there has been a resurgence of violence in the country, as both parties believe they can emerge victorious in the conflict, stated UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo a few days back.
