Ammon News - Anti-pollution teams are still battling an oil leak from a ship that docked at Aqaba Port last week that spread on the beaches, causing pollution, according to Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Commissioner for Tourism and Environment Nidal Al Majali.

Majali said in a press statement that the oil spill from the fuel tanks of the vessel "Floor of Sea" at the Container Terminal spread to the shore, whipped by changing winds, adding that fighting the oil slick requires specialized personnel and equipment.

For his part, Marine Science Station (MSS) Director Ali Sawalmeh assured that readings taken from 11 seawater spots in the first two days of the spill showed that coral at the Aqaba beaches was safe and that the slick had not affected marine environment.

ASEZA has referred the oil leak case to the Aqaba Court prosecutor.
