The Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Jordan Water Governance Activity (WGA), a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), on Thursday launched the National Water Fellowship Program (NWFP).

The Minister of Water, Muhammad Najjar, referred to the program as "advanced" and said that its primary objective is to provide a pipeline of water-specialized human talent and to engage young people in efforts to advance this sector and address existing challenges.

He said the criteria for applying to the USAID-funded fellowship program would be based on the needs and priorities of the water sector, and that the trainees' place of employment and residence would be taken into account to make sure they received an equal opportunity for training.

At a ceremony to launch the NWFP on the occasion of the International Youth Day, the Minister stated that 59 trainees have enrolled in the program's first cohort, and that 300 young men and women will participate in multiple cohorts over the program's four-year lifespan.

Najjar explained that his ministry is implementing a strategic plan to reduce water loss, integrate youth into the water sector, and redefine roles and responsibilities in collaboration with the WGA project.

Sherry F. Carlin, director of the USAID mission in Jordan, stated, "On International Youth Day, we all pledge to provide opportunities for young people, not only because they are the leaders of tomorrow, but also because they are the ambassadors of change."
