Safadi, Guterres talk partnership, common challenges

Ammon News - Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Tuesday affirmed the strength of the effective partnership between Jordan and the UN and cooperation in facing challenges.

Safadi and Guterres discussed ways to uphold regional security and stability and ensure the continued flow of support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and Syrian refugees.

The top diplomats discussed during a meeting on the sidelines of the Tenth Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons ways to find a real political horizon to achieve a comprehensive and just peace based on the two-state solution to the Palestinian cause.

They discussed ways to provide the necessary support to UNRWA to ensure that it continues to provide its services and reviewed the preparations for the ministerial conference that Jordan and Sweden will organise on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly next September.

Safadi praised the UN for its efforts in supporting UNRWA and highlighted the great importance that Jordan attaches to its partnership with the UN.

Guterres, in turn, lauded the role of Jordan and efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah to resolve regional crises and achieve security, stability and prosperity in the region.

Safadi and Guterres discussed efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis. Safadi noted the importance of continued international support for refugees and host countries.

Also discussed were regional and international issues, efforts to find a political solution to the Yemeni crisis, the situation in Libya, efforts to support Iraq and its stability, support for Lebanon and the Ukrainian crisis and its repercussions on food security and energy.

In addition, Safadi met with his Swedish counterpart Ann Linde to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and opening up broader prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

Safadi and Linde discussed efforts to support UNRWA, including the two countries’ preparations to hold a strategic meeting at a ministerial level on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in September to gather sustainable financial support for the UN.

Safadi praised Sweden's efforts to support UNRWA, stressing the importance of the joint work undertaken by the two countries to ensure the necessary support to the Agency.

Safadi held bilateral talks with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, focusing on ways to strengthen bilateral ties.

The two ministers discussed the implementation of the agreements for student exchange programmes.

Safadi and Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in trade, economy, investment, agriculture and tourism.

Safadi met with Belgian Foreign Minister Hajja Habib in a meeting that focused on discussing deepening bilateral relations and the two countries' prospects as part of a partnership with the EU.
