Ammon News - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh on Tuesday met with Abdulhakim Elwaer, Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and regional representative for the Near East and North Africa, who is currently visiting Jordan.

According to a ministry press release, the meeting, which was attended by the FAO's representative in the kingdom, Nabil Assaf, addressed bilateral and multilateral cooperation in agriculture and food security, as well as other matters of mutual interest.

The minister emphasized that food security is a top priority for the Jordanian government, particularly as the country aspires to become a regional food hub by leveraging its geographical location, security, and stability.

Given the challenges posed by the Syrian refugee crisis, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and climate change on food security and supply chains, Shraideh called for regional cooperation in the food sector and support for the Jordanian government's efforts to achieve food security.

Appreciating the Kingdom's partnership with FAO, the minister urged the UN organization to provide and harness its expertise to support Jordan's efforts in the food sector, particularly in light of the challenges that the country and the world face.

The FAO official, for his part, said that the organization is leading international efforts to end hunger and is helping countries achieve food security by developing and modernizing their food and agricultural systems.

He said that the organization is ready to help Jordan and other countries in the region work together, especially in the area of sharing information and experiences.

In Jordan, FAO's work and projects are focused on agriculture and food security, including technology transfer, technical assistance, and capacity building for farmers and agricultural workers.
