Ammon News - Jordan is facing increasing pressure on its resources and infrastructure as a result of regional crises, including refugee crises, and rainfall fluctuations that are part of the growing impacts of climate change, Water Ministry Secretary General Jihad Mahameed said on Sunday.
Mahmeed's remarks came during his participation in the 2nd International Conference on Integrated Natural Disaster Management (ICINDM), organised by Al al-Bayt University and held in the Dead Sea area.
He stressed the importance of coordination to protect water resources, most notably groundwater, highlighting that it is a joint responsibility of governmental and private entities, as well as the public.
Mahameed also shed light on the increasing demand for water and the decline in its availability, stressing that the ministry has adopted strict measures to reduce water loss and limit violations on water resources in all regions of the Kingdom.
He referred to the "tangible results" of the ministry’s efforts and the ministry’s progress in identifying defects in Jordan’s water infrastructure, thus helping to guarantee the optimal use of available resources.
President of Al al-Bayt University Hani Dmour underlined the “key partnership” between research centres, universities and official institutions to work together to confront crises and natural disasters.
Dmour indicated that the conference discussed a number of issues pertaining to crises and natural disasters, presenting a number of models and the mechanisms for solving them.
The conference included the participation of researchers from the US, Canada, Turkey, Palestine and Jordan.
