Ammon News - Secretary-General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jihad Mahamid, stressed the importance of coordinating public-private efforts and involving citizens in protecting Jordan's water resources, especially groundwater, as "a joint responsibility".

Mahamid's remarks came at 2nd International Conference on Integrated Natural Disaster Management (ICINDM), on Sunday organized by Crisis and Disaster Management, Modeling and Simulation Center at Al al-Bayt University, which saw participation of a number of Jordanian disaster management bodies and international organizations.

Mahamid, according to a ministry statement, said Jordan's water sector has been "remarkably" affected by multiple regional crises, primarily various refugee crises, escalating climate change impact, and rainfall fluctuations, which put "increasing" pressure on the Kingdom's resources and infrastructure, especially the water sector.

Increasing demand and decline in available water triggered Jordan's "difficult" water situation in recent years, he said, adding that Ministry of Water and Irrigation has put in place "strict measures to limit theft cases countrywide and reduce water loss.

On feasibility of Jordan's water policy, he said efforts made are yielding "tangible" outcomes to identify defects in the Kingdom's water infrastructure and thus improve responsiveness capabilities and optimal use of available resources.
