10 defendants to go on trial over deadly Aqaba gas leak

Ammon News - The Public Prosecution on Monday ordered 10 people to go on trial as it wrapped up an investigation into the Aqaba gas leak incident that left 13 people dead.

Judicial Council Secretary-General and media spokesman, Judge Walid Kanakaria, told Petra that the defendants will stand trial before the Aqaba Court of First Instance, after the Aqaba prosecutor general ordered their detention at a correctional and rehabilitation center.

He said that they face criminal charges of 13 counts of murder, causing harm and damage to property and negligence of duty in violation of the Penal Code and the Economic Crimes Law.

The company managing and operating the port was also charged with the crime of not providing "a proper environment" for the protection of workers from occupational hazardsphysical, chemical and biologicaland the leakage of hazardous chemicals into wild life and marine life in violation of the Environment Protection Law No. 21 of 2001 of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, the spokesman said.

He said that the Aqaba court, which has jurisdiction on the case, will set a date soon for the first trial session.
