Inflation up 2.4pct in January

The Consumer Prince Index (CPI), a measure of inflation, edged up by 2.46 percent in January of 2022, reaching 103.71 points against 101.22 points in the same period of last year, according to official figures released Thursday.
In its monthly report, the Department of Statistics (DoS) said that the main commodity groups, which contributed to this increase, were transport by 1.12 percentage points, vegetables, dried and canned legumes by 0.42 percentage points, meat and poultry by 0.22 percentage points, fuel and lighting by 0.19 percentage points and culture and entertainment by 0.13 percentage points.
However, the prices of several commodities slightly dropped including health-related commodities by 0.08 percentage points, beverages and refreshments by 0.04 percentage points, rentals by 0.02 percentage points, and condiments, food enhancers and other foodstuffs by 0.02 percentage points.
Comparing inflation in January of 2022 to December of last year, the DoS indicated that the CPI went up by 0.17, reaching 103.71 points in January compared to 103.54 in December.
