Petra 4Q figures "indicator" of tourism recovery: PDTRA

Ammon News - The number of visitors to the Petra city saw a hike of 118 per cent at the end of 2021 compared to last year, which has seen a decline in tourists traffic due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A total of 236,088 tourists of all nationalities, including 135,064 non-Arab visitors, 16,026 Arabs 11,615 and 84,776 Jordanians, according to a Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) statistics.

According to the PDTRA statistics, the city received the majority of its visitors, nearly 150,000 of all nationalities, in the fourth quarter of 2021, which represents an indicator of the tourism sector recovery from impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

PDTRA Chief Commissioner Suleiman Farajat told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Sunday that tourists traffic of all nationalities, especially non-Arabs, saw an increase, which benefited owners of businesses and local communities there. "There are strong indications that tourism is resuming its normal form in Petra."

The continued improvement of the tourism situation is linked to the global epidemiological situation and the mechanism of dealing with it during the coming weeks, Farajat added, expressing hope that growth of tourism traffic to the city would keep increasing.

PDTRA is on the verge of completing several projects that mainly serve the tourism process in the Red Rose City, which, due to the pandemic, has suffered a significant decline in the tourism traffic, many businesses were shut down and more than 80 per cent of its residents were affected.
