Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, accompanied by HRH Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall on Tuesday visited the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Al-Maghtas) in Jordan east of the Jordan River.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Baptism Site Commission and head of the mission of honour accompanying the guest.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall toured a number of archaeological, religious and historical places at the Baptism Site, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall began their tour by visiting St. Elijah's Hill (Tal Mar Elias), the remains of the monastery and the cave in which John the Baptist, Yahya bin Zakaria, peace be upon him, lived, and then arrived at the site where Jesus was baptized.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were briefed by Director General of the Baptism Site Commission, Rustom Mkhijan, on key archaeological sites in the Baptism and the site's utilities.

Mkhijan presented Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall a visit certificate, the harmony rosary and the shield of the site, and the two guests also signed the register of senior visitors.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were also accompanied by UK Ambassador to Jordan, Bridget Brind, and Jordan Ambassador to the UK, Manar Dabbas.

The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, peace be upon him, (Al-Maghtas) on the eastern bank of the Jordan River holds a great importance to the followers of the three monotheistic religions, and is one of the most sacred places on earth for all Christians. There Jesus, peace be upon him, was baptized by John the Baptist and from that spot Christianity began.
