Ammon News - Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh and a number of municipalities' officials and governors took part on Wednesday in a conference organized by the World Bank (WB) entitled "MENA Cities at the Forefront of Climate Action: The Time is Now."

Shawarbeh's participation came as a speaker in two sessions: the cities, economic growth and climate change, and the actionable pathways towards climate-smart cities in MENA.

During the conference, speakers highlighted that urban areas must now look towards innovative green growth solutions, adding that the physical and economic density of cities can provide the impetus for technological change and infrastructure investments that support low carbon economic development. Discussions also dealt with the key role cities play in formulating and implementing effective climate action.

The event brought together mayors and governors from the MENA region as well as international global experts to discuss climate change as a challenge and an opportunity for development and economic growth at the city level.
