Committing suicide: 5 cases in less than 24 hours in Jordan

Ammon News - Mamon Al-Adwan - 5 suicide cases have been reported within 24 hours in Jordan, more specifically in the city of Irbid.
One Jordanian student and Syrian citizen hanged themselves.
The student who is studying medicine at the university hanged himself at the family home while the Syrian citizen hanged himself at his work place.
Another case has been reported as a pregnant women drank a toxic substance in front of a court in Irbid after a family dispute which resulted in the death of herself and her baby.
The fifth case was a man who set himself in fire in a street in Irbid.
Kaltham Meryash, an activist and president of women’s union in Jordan said to sputniknews that there are several reasons which have increased the suicide cases in Jordan. Most importantly, psychological issues, depression as well as alcohol and drugs addiction.
Meryash added that the main reason behind committing suicide in Jordan is economic difficulties, the difficult financial situation as well as the consequences of COVID-19 on people as unemployment reached 45%.
According to official statistics, suicide cases in Jordan increased during the recent years as Jordan witnessed 113 cases in 2013, 120 cases in 2016, 130 cases in 2017 and 142 cases in 2018.
In 2020, Jordan witnessed 152 suicide cases, an increase of 33 cases compared to 2019 which witnessed 119 cases, according to official statistics.
