HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, Chairman of the Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST), said that it has become imperative to improve quality education outputs to plug a supply-demand gap.

Prince El Hassan also called for the formulation of a two-pronged plan for training and employment that guarantees synergy between the private and public sectors for priority setting.

The prince made the remarks during a virtual ceremony held Monday to launch the sixth phase of Sectorial Studies, a flagship initiative by the HCST's National Centre for Human Resources Development.

The sixth stage of these studies sought to deliver a deep-dive into the gap between supply and demand of human resources in the transport and metal industry sectors.

His Highness noted the need for all-encompassing priority-setting, in addition to integrated and cross-cutting action in the various domains, calling for "translating research efforts into objective and purposeful results based on humanizing numbers".

He also called for cementing data-informed regional cooperation to achieve integration, stressing that "no country can alone address the challenge of balancing the water, energy, and food nexus." In this regard, Prince El Hassan proposed the introduction of a regional bank for water data.

Also attending the ceremony was Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh who said the "sectorial studies" are data-rich because they present quantitative analyses related to the distribution of the workforce in vital and key sectors, such as the metals industries and transportation.

In the breakdowns they produced, the premier added, the studies focused on gender responsiveness as well as the aforementioned sectors' intake of the disabled.

Furthermore, Khasawneh said the studies "diagnose and identify the challenges and problems experienced by workers and those involved in these vital sectors. If such challenges are resolved, the prime minister stressed, these sectors will be more empowered to play a greater role in the development drive and in addressing poverty and unemployment.
