Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The State Security Court (SSC) on Monday refused to release on bail 16 detainees, who were arrested in connection with the illegal tobacco manufacturing and smuggling case, describing it as an "economic crime".

SSC President, Col. Mohammad Afif, stood by the court's previous decision to deny release on bail for all the detainees, including Awni Mutee, the prime suspect in the tobacco corruption case, who is still at large abroad.

A special team of prosecutors was formed at the end of July to investigate suspects in the case upon a decision by the court’s Attorney General, Brig. Gen. Hazem Majali.

The suspects are facing charges, including carrying out endangerment acts on public safety and security, carrying out acts that would change the country's economic entity or endangers the society basic conditions, joint customs evasion as it is described as an economic crime, jointly cheat on goods quality, joint general tax evasion and money laundering.

The Interpol issued an International Red Notice against Awni Mutee in July for engaging in illegal acts on Jordanian territory, including the manufacturing and smuggling of fake cigarettes.
