Jordan's public debt stands at JOD26bln

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's public debt surged to JOD26.046 billion by the end of September, comprising 95 per cent of Gross Domestic Product, estimated at JOD27.41 billion, according to official figures.

Like this time last year, the nation's public debt made up 93.4 per cent of its GDP, the figures by the Ministry of Finance showed. Out of the total, JOD6.6 billion is debt owed by the National Electricity Company and the Water Authority.

The ministry said the uptick in the country's public debt was driven by lower economic growth forecasts for 2016. Domestic debt now amounts to about JOD14.71 billion while foreign debt makes up JOD9.44 billion of the total.
