Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prominent figures and tribal leaders from the governorate of Maan criticized what they considered "government slacking and shortcomings" in dealing with the recent violent incidents and wave of arrests in the southern governorate.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Wednesday, the Maan residents called on the government to take swift actions in dealing with the implications of the recent wave of violence that afflicted the governorate, including increased crime rate and tribal violence.

Maan deputy Amjad Aal Khattab, who attended Wednesday's meeting, told Ammon News that the meeting was "positive," with Maan residents frankly expressing to the Prime Minister the government's lack of action towards "hot issues" afflicting the governorate.

Attendees stressed the need to "turn the page over" regarding the recent deadly violence at Al Hussein Bin Talal University in Maan, which left four dead and dozens injured during tribal clashes between students inside campus.

The campus violence escalated and extended into the governorate, prompting young men to blockade the major desert highway and attack passersby.

The residents criticized the "excessive use of force" by security forces in dealing with the Maan events in the past months.

Ensour reportedly "apologized" to the Maan dignitaries if there was any government "shortcomings" in dealing with Maan governorate issues, according to MP Aal Khattab.

Maan residents had told Ammon News that the government was expected to take swift action in arresting suspects and initiating reconciliation efforts by last Sunday.
