Islamic Centrist Party "Egyptian Military Buried Democracy"

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's Islamic Centrist Party on Saturday said that what took place in Egypt of ousting President Mohamed Mursi was a "military coup on political legitimacy" and a setback to democracy.

The party said in a press statement that the "military coup" and the events that followed the overthrow of Mursi are measures that "buried democracy in its inception" adding that the Egyptian army and opposition are responsible for the consequences.

The Islamic Centrist Party denounced in the statement the series of arrests and detentions of politicians and journalists, and the military's orders to shut down satellite channels and news websites supporting Mursi, while keeping opposition media outlets at work.

The statement considered that the events in Egypt bolster the position of those who propagate violence and extremism, who reject the electoral and democratic process, and weakens the position of moderates who seek reform through the channels of democracy and ballot boxes.

"We at the party do not defend the mistakes done by some officials, but we do not accept that these mistakes be rectified through a coup against legitimacy and the interference of the military, which we hope would remain a guardian and champion of this legitimacy," the statement said.

Fierce clashes erupted in Egypt following the overthrow of Mursi, with over 30 people dead and hundreds injured in clashes between pro- and anti-Mursi protesters and security cadres.

Egypt's first freely elected president was toppled on Wednesday on the eve of his first anniversary in office, as huge rallies were carried out in Cairo and other cities calling for Mursi's resignation and blasting the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
