Ammon News - ROME (Petra) Minister of Water and Irrigation and Minister of Agriculture, Hazem al-Nasser, who is deputizing for the His Majesty King Abdullah II at the meetings of the 38th session of the Conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has received a certificate from the FAO Director-General Jose Graziano Da Silva granted to His Majesty the King in recognition of his active efforts in reducing the number of hungry in the whole world.

This came during a ceremony attended by a large number of heads of state, prime ministers and ministers taking part in the meetings of the international organization in Rome.

Al-Nasser thanked the international organization and said the Kingdom was able to make step great strides in reducing the number of hungry people despite the harsh conditions over the past decades.

Jordan receives certificate of appreciation for fight against hunger

FAO has presented Jordan with a certificate of appreciation for its efforts in the fight against hunger in the Kingdom.

Minister Al Nasser, who is taking part in the meetings of the 38th session of FAO in Rome, received the award as a representative of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

In his speech at the ceremony , the minister expressed his gratitude for awarding the certificate to the people of Jordan in recognizing their efforts in combating hunger, poverty and helping neighboring countries.

He noted that Jordan has been able to reach its targets in fighting hunger despite surrounding regional conditions, notably the repercussions of the Syrian crisis which led to the displacement of more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees to Jordan.

Al Nasser pointed out that those refugees shared Jordanians’ food and water, even though Jordan is considered the third poorest country in the world, in terms of water share per capita; therefore, there was a need to urge the international community and international donors to stand by Jordan and help the country overcome this crisis, which might shake its economy and social security.

The minister also expressed appreciation to those countries that provided assistance to Jordan, as it helps Syrian refugees and the Kingdom to shoulder the costs of this burden, which surpassed $1 billion in 2013 just in the water and agriculture sectors alone. Jordan was among 38 countries that have met internationally established targets in the fight against hunger, the FAO said, noting that the Kingdom satisfied Millennium Development Goal (MDG) number one, to halve the proportion of hungry people in the country from 1990-92 to 2010-12.
